Year 6 children are expected to read for at least 20 minutes every night, at least once during the weekend (Friday to Sunday) and sometime during holiday periods. If a child finishes their banded school reading book, then they should continue to read for the remaining time up to 15 minutes. Don't forget, it is vital for children to be exposed to a range of texts- so use whatever you have to hand, for example a take away menu, TV guide or magazine. Children change their books as and when they need to. Although teachers will remind them, it is important that Year 6 children are taking more responsibility for choosing and changing their own books. Children are given a reading record and they should complete this themselves to show that they have read. Support from home is vital and we would ask that you to try to read with your child as often as possible. If you require any further support or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact school.
