Phonics and Reading

Presently we use Storytime Phonics to support your child with their phonics and reading development. From January, this will change to First Class Phonics. We will let you know all about this once we begin using it! With StoryTime Phonics, we introduce 4 new phonemes (or letter sounds) per week delivered through an exciting story with actions and visuals. Please continue to practise the phonemes and words within the blue book we have sent home. We are currently practising reading and writing simple words!

Your child will also be bringing home a reading book and a bedtime story. The reading book will be aimed at your child's reading level and we will allocate them new books on a weekly basis.  These books will most likely contain words that the children must use their phonic skills to sound out, for example, s-i-t (says 'sit'). It may also contain 'tricky words' the children cannot sound out, for example, 'to' or 'the'. We advise you to share the book with your child each night for about 5 minutes - little and often is best to prevent your child from becoming restless or tired. Other books will be matched to the children's individual needs and increasing ability to read key words and decode independently as we move through the year.
